The Paddler’s Journal

The Paddler’s Journal shares practical tips, seasonal insights, and lessons from the outrigger paddling community. Rooted in Mākaha and welcoming paddlers of every experience level, we explore technique, regatta and long-distance racing, club leadership, and the conversations that help build stronger crews.

The second practice matters.

A newcomer may enjoy their first session and still wonder whether they have a place in the club.

Remove the guesswork

Explain where to meet, what to bring, whom to ask for help, and what the next session will involve. Familiar routines can be invisible to longtime members and confusing to everyone else.

Give people a connection

Introduce a returning paddler who can answer ordinary questions without making the newcomer feel like an interruption. Rotate that responsibility so welcoming is a club habit rather than one person’s unpaid job.

Teach expectations clearly

Explain care for shared equipment, communication, attendance expectations, and how decisions are made. State the actual club policy rather than relying on “everyone knows.” Distinguish suggestions from requirements.

Invite feedback

Ask what was clear and what felt confusing. Make room for different learning speeds and life circumstances. A conversation about participation can be honest without questioning someone’s commitment or character.

Bring it to practice

Ask a newer member what they wish someone had explained before their second practice. Use the answer to improve the welcome routine.
